Overhill Gardens’ 15 Year Open House
May 16 & 17

East TN Mountain ViewsWith the number of folks making trips out to Overhill this year for that plant of choice, you would think that this “native plant movement” is actually spreading like wildfire! We have had the opportunity to rub elbows with some amazing gardeners, replete with personal stories and life experiences around their success with our hardy plant material.

Some had come looking for plants that will finally work for that difficult spot… too much moisture, copious amounts of hot dry sunlight, or eroded banks that just aren’t staying put with those other plants from the general marketplace. They had often become worn down by using non-native ornamentals and had finally arrived at that eureka moment when that native sister steps up to the plate. Then there are the old-schoolers who have been using native plants for a day and an age.

Since Overhill Gardens is marking its 15 year anniversary, perhaps a little history is warranted. Back in 1999, Avi Askey began to carve out a native plant nursery inspired by the vast selection of good indigenous plants that he observed growing here in East Tennessee. A second generation landscape-nurseryman, Avi had a vision of “bringing back the natives,” which have been evolving around this region for more than 10,000 years! Assembling what has now increased to 625+ species of plants in the little nursery and visited by hundreds of people annually, folks miraculously come from far and wide looking specifically for what Avi has to offer here at Overhill Gardens.

If you recall, 1999 was a tense time, with apprehension over the Y2K threat and the speed of technological change. But as you can imagine, when you work with plants, you live with hope! Patience, stewardship, positive work ethics, and sheer love for these numerous plant species, coupled with your support and encouragement, has brought this nursery to its 15 year milestone. Undaunted by the distance folks travel to get to Overhill Gardens, Avi’s philosophy is “grow it, and they will come!”

When you join us on May 16th and 17th, you will be greeted by friendly and knowledgeable staff, plants spread out across a few acres, all approachable by foot or golf cart, our usual round of delectable refreshments to enhance your visit, and an opportunity to discover new and worthy plants for your gardens. If this is your first time, you will even receive a flowering plant to sweeten your visit! Avi and his team can make new recommendations for your problem areas, and with the number of diverse plant species, we are confident there is a plant for that difficult corner.

Come, re-discover a plant from your youth, rub elbows with your neighbors, and enjoy the stillness of the Cherokee National Forest as you make your visit here to Overhill. The distinctively warm and loving environment should make your trip to Overhill productive and memorable. We’ll be watching for you!

Come to Vonore on 411… turn onto 360 at Sloan’s, and continue without any turns for 13 miles until you reach the nursery. Plenty of parking and refreshments will be available!
