Keep Up with Your Scheduled Maintenance Services

Compiled from the Car Care Council

It is true that advances in automotive technology have resulted in vehicles that are better built and longer lasting; but, they are not maintenance-free and parts do wear down. To ensure peak performance and that you get years of trouble-free driving, your manufacturer has developed a recommended maintenance schedule for your vehicle, which is outlined in your owner’s manual.

Auto technicians say the key to keeping vehicles running well today and down the road is routine maintenance. Yet many drivers tend to stall when it comes to keeping up with some everyday auto basics.

A recent survey by the Car Care Council found:

• 54% had low tire pressure

• 38% had low or dirty engine oil

• 28% had inadequate cooling protection

• 19% needed new belts

• 16% had dirty air filters

• 10% had low or contaminated brake fluid

When should my car have scheduled maintenance?

There are two types of maintenance services – minor and major. Minor services are generally performed at 7,500, 15,000, 45,000, and 75,000 miles, while major services are performed at 30,000, 60,000, and 90,000-mile intervals.

What are “minor” services?

While it varies by make and model, minor services generally include:

• Changing the oil and oil filter

• Lubricating the chassis if it has not been factory sealed

• Inspection of all fluids, filters, belts, hoses, brakes, and emissions

• Tire rotation (some manufacturers recommend as a part of a minor service)

What are “major” services?

While it varies by make and model, major services generally include:

• All minor services

• The replacement of various filters, fluids (transmission, differential, brake, and steering), and spark plugs and wires

• Timing belt replacement at the manufacturer’s recommended replacement interval

• Other specified major services related to the fuel delivery, emissions, and ignition systems such as spark plugs and plug wires

What about my warranty?

Scheduled maintenance service must be completed in order to keep your warranty valid, and The Car Shop is authorized to perform most of the services recommended by each manufacturer.  This service is prescribed based on the manufacturer’s recommendations, which are vehicle specific, or as needed as determined by our inspection and based on industry standards.
