Color Me Fall!

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011 | Uncategorized | No Comments

As the seasons turn one into another, Mother Nature tells us what to do! She’s saying “put away those spring and summer flowers and do as I do – think fall colors!” You don’t see tulips out of doors in the fall and you shouldn’t see them indoors either. When you set the color schemes for your home that doesn’t mean that your seasonal arrangements don’t change. Your permanent floral arrangements need to change with the seasons. Permanent means that they’ll still be good to bring out again next year, not that they need to be permanently in that spot.

Start with your front door and work inwards. Your door decoration should reflect the warm welcome you want to extend to your guests. A symbol of welcome is the pineapple, and Williamsburg-style arrangements include the pineapple with apples. Your Thanksgiving dining table arrangement can be tall and luxurious for display purposes, but when seating diners there remember that you’ll need to have a lower profile that doesn’t stop the flow of conversation and eye contact across the table. We often use the fruit and vegetable filled cornucopia to show the autumn harvest’s bounty, but fall leaves and seasonal flowers are plentiful for any color scheme.

Not all of us can use the orange pumpkins and leaves in our décor, but fall colors include so many more than that. Take a color lesson from the trees. If you really look outdoors you’ll see various shades of green, earthy tans, creams and browns, terra cotta, rust, red, burgundy, purple and all shades of yellow and gold. Pumpkin varieties now give us choices of color, including green and white, besides the various shades of orange. Bring the pinecones, magnolia pods, cat tails and decorative grasses in to bring natural elements indoors.

If the casual or country look doesn’t fit your personality, a touch of elegance can be achieved with the addition of classic shaped pumpkins, apples, gourds and berries in the metallic shades of silver, gold, copper and bronze!

Now is the time to add that cozy throw on the sofa and change the toss pillows to reflect the season’s transformation. Pink can adjust to deep rose or burgundy, pale yellow goes gold, peach turns to rust, baby blue to cerulean and lavender morphs to deep purple. Decorative area rugs can reflect the deeper tones of this time of year either as an addition to your décor or a change from the ones you use during other times.

Don’t let the seasons pass by dull and unadorned. Designer, Margaret Boyes, of Interior Motives, can help decorate your life with permanent botanicals and accessories that will enliven your surroundings tastefully with appropriate colors for those seasonal changes.
