Winter is Tough on Your Car’s Battery

Tuesday, December 3rd, 2013 | Uncategorized | No Comments

While automobile battery failure is not uncommon, battery failure is more apt to occur during winter months, leaving you out in the cold. The good news is that there are several steps you can take to avoid a dead battery this winter.

Winter is tough on car batteries for two main reasons. First, the oil in your engine’s crankcase thickens, which places an additional demand on your battery. Second, cold temperatures significantly reduce your battery’s efficiency.

Here are steps you can take to avoid being left out in the cold by a dead battery:
• Inspect your automobile’s battery for cracks, bulging, leaks, corrosion, or loose cables.
• If your battery is more than three years old, have it tested.
• Park inside when possible.

These few precautions can minimize the likelihood that you’ll experience car battery failure this winter. Should you be in doubt as to how to perform any of the maintenance steps, we encourage you to visit Dr. Marty’s Car Care Clinic at 400 E. Broadway Street in downtown Lenoir City, where they will be happy to assist you with this and any other auto-related issues.

One word of caution: if you find it necessary to jump start your car or someone else’s, please be certain to follow the manufacturer’s instructions closely. Failure to do so can result in serious injury or even death, not to mention expensive damage to your automobile.
