Imagine the Possibilities!
Picture this. You just moved in, and your home is a blank slate. Then you move in with your furniture, and it just doesn’t feel the same as it did when it was a blank slate. It’s also very common to live in a home for 20+ years and start to get tired of it. You loved the way you furnished it then, but over time it just doesn’t feel right anymore. It might be that your furniture no longer matches the character of the house, but it could also be that your style has changed – and that’s okay. It’s normal for our style and tastes to change over the years. Think about it, none of us are wearing what we wore 20 years ago, so why is your home still using the same furniture from then? Let your home reflect who you are now.
As interior designers, we wear many hats: designer, decorator, styler, project manager, ordering, receiving, installer, you name it, but one of the many ways we help our clients is by giving them peace of mind. We do this by letting them see their space in a few different ways before deciding on their new path forward. Let’s go behind the scenes on a recent project where we helped a client update their space for who they are now.
They had a living room that was originally designed in the ‘90s. These clients love their home, and they loved this room at the time it was designed, but the homeowners were beginning to be tired of it. They loved the window and an original oil painting above the fireplace that they purchased when they first bought the house, but the rest of the room was no longer serving them. At this point, they had begun to hate the floors as well and wanted a simpler look. Another concern was the darkness of the space and lack of light. Additionally, they wanted a more comfortable seating arrangement that allowed the two of them to watch tv but have space for their adult children to also feel comfortable in the space and watch tv with them when they visit.
After we met with the clients, we established a budget, took “before” pictures, and measured the space. Then we went back to the studio and got to work. We took the information that we learned from the clients of their needs and wants for the space – as well as their style preferences, and we came up with a few layouts and color combinations that pulled inspiration from the color palette in their oil painting and created corresponding furnishing options to bring it all to life. You can see in the two proposed 3D room render concepts, how different each of the rooms feel, while satisfying their needs. Both layouts move the tv from the built ins that flank the fireplace and move those to the long walls. This provides an opportunity for more seating and a larger tv to be viewed from more angles. It also removes the occasional glare from the door and window. For comfort, reclining sofas or a pair of leather reclining chairs are shown for a more ergonomic and comfortable tv viewing. In both layouts, a larger rug anchors the space and adds lightness and pattern. A lighter paint color in a more neutral hue added a touch brightness, and lets the faux finish on the ceiling become a star in the room again. A pair of floor lamps flank the media piece as well as a pair of table lamps on either side of the sofa to create a more balanced arrangement of light radially throughout the space. Large mirrors on either side of the doors help reflect more of the light in the space as well as reflect the built-in bookcases on the other side of the room. Behind the bookends we added a dark grasscloth to accent her white collectibles and accessories and continue the rich color of the leather recliners.
In the end, the layout with 2 recliners and a sofa in between won, and the colors selected featured an aqua and dark teal upholstery with jewel toned accents in a plaid fabric as well as that pulled from the oil painting. The furniture features a whitewashed oak anchored with rich iron legs to add lightness and a neutral base for the more colorful pieces throughout the space. One of our favorite details is a custom faux iron treatment that enhances the architecture of the window and adds interest to the window without removing the view or the light. The pattern features a large-scale stain glass motif proportional to the window. We repeated this element in the large picture window in the foyer to continue the new architectural detail throughout the home.
The final result speaks for itself, and all within the client’s proposed budget. In addition to the furniture and window treatment selections, we helped this couple select new flooring as well as freshen up other areas in their home such as their kitchen, dining room, bedroom, and foyer. You can see in the final image just how different this room feels compared to what it was like in the beginning. We are grateful that we were able to help them transform their home into a place they are happy to spend another 20 years in.
