If I had to sum up in two words what I’ve learned about spring 2011 fashion trends, I’d say “anything goes!” Even the base fabrics can’t seem to make a decision and are a blend of various textures and finishes; colors range from stark white to wild floral prints, fabrics from “crinkle knit” to polished cottons.
Trouser styles are going everywhere… from skin-hugger to wide leg! THE BEST RULE IS THAT THERE ARE NO RULES!!
It must be said, however, that the wide leg pant is not for everyone. It’s for that very reason they’ve never been THE dominate style to conquer the fashion scene. Skinnies have a long life left in them, but this is the year in which flares are on trend and the wide leg pants are there alongside them. While the wide leg pants may not become your new wardrobe staple just yet, don’t overlook it as an elegantly stylish addition to your 2011 wardrobe!
There are three key styles of wide leg pants to choose from this season:
WIDE LEG TROUSERS
Sophisticated yet relaxed, sharp and tailored with a mid to high waist; perfect for the menswear look.
WIDE LEG JEAN
Jeans that are wide from the top of the thigh down can have a tendency to end up looking baggy, so look for jeans that are more fitted on the thigh with a moderately wide leg.
PALAZZO PANTS
Even fuller cut than the wide leg, the palazzo pants looks best in a more casual setting. Fabrics should be light and with plenty of drape and flow. Silk, jerseys or crepe, even sheer fabrics for a look that’s daring but now.
The wide leg pant works best on the taller figure; more petite figures should opt for the slimmer leg styles.
How to wear the wide leg pant
With heels, please! Flats simply will never complete this look as heels will… wear with a slim-fitting top to balance out the volume on the bottom half and with 70’s glamour… a wide leg trouser, platforms and a big, floppy hat.
Begin playing with the wider leg trousers now and you’ll be ready for the next season – fall – where you’ll see even more of this style. So, while you don’t want to ditch your jeggings and skinnies just yet, it might be a good time to re-introduce a pair or two of wider-leg pants into the mix!!
