The Monroe County Friends of Animals (MCFA) was instrumental in convincing county government that an animal shelter was desperately needed, and the Monroe County Animal Shelter (MCAS) opened its doors in 2005. MCFA supports MCAS, both financially and with an army of volunteers. Since then, literally thousands and thousands of animals have come into the shelter, and from the beginning there was a determination to save as many of their lives as possible by finding them loving and qualified homes either locally or in other locales where there is a shortage of adoptable pets.
In 2006, the New York Rolling Rescue was created which established a working relationship between MCAS and Upstate New York SPCA located in Queensbury, a little community north of Albany and near Saratoga. Each and every month since that time, MCFA has rented a van and transported about 45 cats and dogs, puppies and kittens to the no-kill shelter in Queensbury, where adoptive homes are waiting. People go online and see the animals that will become available through Petfinder.com and then travel from places like Vermont, Long Island and New York City to be there when the animals become available for adoption.
The cost of the program is substantial and is funded entirely by donations. When Carol Morrison took over as coordinator of the Rolling Rescue in 2007, she came up with an idea to raise money to fund it. She called it “Sponsor a Puppy,” and it was determined that it cost about $25 to send each animal to the New York shelter. The cost to rent the van and for gasoline has risen substantially since 2007, but for only $25 you can be responsible to save the life of a puppy or a kitten and you will receive a thank you note with a photo of the animal that you saved. Send your donation to MCFA, P.O. Box 106, Vonore, TN 37885-0106. Be sure to write the words “Sponsor a Puppy” on your check.
