Eat Naturally. Eat Healthfully.

Have you ever wondered how many of the health related concerns confronting us today are related to our food chain? After all, are we not told that “we are what we eat”?
Foods we purchase and ingest are often raised or grown using pesticides, inorganic fertilizers, growth hormones and preservatives. And while we continue to consume more and more processed foods, the occurrence of many diseases seems to be on the rise. As a result, growing numbers of Americans are altering their diets in an attempt to reduce their intake of these foods believed to contain these same chemicals and preservatives.
These same concerns were very much on the minds of husband and wife team, Tim and Charleen Cnossen, when they relocated from New England to East Tennessee in 2008. The Cnossens, along with their sons Evan and Tyler, purchased 23 acres of woods and pasture, and began their new life in Athens.
After building their home in 2009, the next step for the Cnossens was to transform the land into a working farm that would sustain their family with naturally grown chicken, pork, and eggs. They also planned to sell this same food to area residents who shared their belief in the advantages of eating healthier, all-natural, pasture-raised, and locally grown foods.
Their first endeavor was pastured poultry. What most people are likely unaware of is that until the 1950’s, all poultry was raised outdoors. Today, most poultry is raised in confined chicken houses on factory farms where they never see sunlight or benefit from the natural nutrients found in field grasses.
Pastured poultry is the old-fashioned, natural way of raising chickens where they forage on pasture grasses and wholesome grains in a healthier and cleaner environment. When mature, the chickens are processed at a USDA certified facility and packaged for resale to the public, where they can pick up their chickens at the Cnossen farm.
“Our goal is to have a sustainable farm, living by the principle that we must meet the needs of the present generation without jeopardizing future generations’ ability to meet their own needs,” said Tim. “While emphasizing responsible stewardship of our resources, our mission is to provide the highest quality food available as we develop a farmer/consumer relationship that supports our local economy.”
