MACA Performance Season Features Celtic Tenors

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011 | Uncategorized | No Comments

Monroe Area Council for the Arts (MACA) has announced the lineup for the 2011-2012 Performance Series, based at Hiwassee College in Madisonville. Included among the six shows are the Celtic Tenors, recognized as one of the most successful classical crossover artists to emerge from Ireland.

The series will open on Oct. 1 with Country Royalty: A Tribute to Hank Williams & Patsy Cline. Jason Petty, star of “Hank Williams: Lost Highway” and 2003 Obie Award winner, recreates the role for which he has become famous. Grammy-nominated singing sensation Carolyn Martin gives a jaw-dropping performance as Patsy Cline. More than 20 chart-topping hits are performed with a live band.

MACA will present Golden Dragon Acrobats, recognized throughout the world as the premiere Chinese acrobatic touring company, on Nov. 15. World-renowned impresario Danny Chang and choreographer Angela Chang combine award-winning acrobatics, traditional dance, and spectacular costumes to present a show of breathtaking skill and spellbinding beauty.

On Nov. 29, the ever-popular Celtic Tenors will return to southeast Tennessee to perform on the MACA stage. The unique voices, charm, and wit of Daryl, James, and Matthew, combined with talented young Musical Director Colm Rogan, provide audiences with the highest standards of operatic singing and a thoroughly uplifting experience.

The Missoula Children’s Theatre production of The Secret Garden, starring 60 local children in grades K-12, is scheduled for Jan. 28.

The Carolina Chocolate Drops, winners of the 2011 Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album, will perform on Feb. 7. In 2008, the Drops became the first black string band to play at the Grand Ole Opry. Founders Dom Flemons and Rhiannon Giddens are joined by new band members Hubby Jenkins and Adam Matta.

The series will close on May 11 with Matt Belsante: A Modern Jazz Singer. At 26, Matt Belsante performs like a seasoned entertainer well beyond his years. His latest recording, “Blame It on My Youth,” a series of covers of classic Jazz and Big Band standards, was released to rave reviews.

In addition, MACA season ticket subscribers will receive a discount coupon for Mark Twain At-Large featuring Ron Jewell at the new Broad Street School auditorium in Sweetwater on March 27. Jewell’s full-length one-man tour de force seemingly channels the 70-year-old plus Clemens (a.k.a Twain) as he engages the audience in an intimate face-to-face conversation filled with stories and anecdotes taken directly from the literary pages.

Season tickets are now on sale and can be purchased with cash or check at all Citizens National Banks in Monroe County or with a credit card by calling MACA at (423) 442-3210 or online at www.monroearts.com. Season ticket prices are $125/family (living in the same household), $100/couple, and $60/individual. Box office tickets are also available for individual performances.

As an added value, at the time of MACA season ticket purchase, subscribers may also purchase the Athens Area Council for the Arts season subscription for a discount. AACA shows include The Capitol Steps, Spencers Theater of Illusion, San Jose Taiko, Ain’t Misbehavin’, and Jim Witter’s Long and Winding Road.
