Community Church’s New Associate Pastor

Wednesday, September 4th, 2019 | Uncategorized | No Comments

Rev. Jennifer Rutter was called to be an Associate Pastor at Community Church of Tellico Village in July.

Where did you relocate from?
I moved from Colorado, where I was serving as the Pastoral Resident at First Baptist Church in Colorado Springs, CO. I am a native Tennessean, but readjusting to humidity was still a shock!

What’s your educational background?
I earned my BS in Political Science from Belmont University and my Master of Divinity (MDiv) from Duke Divinity School.

What drew you to Community Church?
I love that this church is diverse in denominational backgrounds and focused on being the hands and feet of Jesus. There is real diversity in what people believe, but we agree on Christ. You can see this value in our mission work in the community. We support so many local organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and the Child Advocacy Center.

I’m also grateful our beautiful building is used every day for ministry. Churches have an obligation to use their resources well, and Community Church certainly does that!

What is your role at Community Church?
I serve as an Associate Pastor, which means I share preaching and pastoral care duties. I oversee missions at our congregation and our women’s ministry.

What are your personal interests/hobbies?
Obviously, cheering on Duke basketball! I’m an avid reader and enjoy listening to podcasts. I also deeply enjoy traveling.

Can you recommend a book?
Just one is way too difficult! How about a short list organized topically?

Biography – Dapper Dan: Made in Harlem: A Memoir by Daniel R. Day
Christian – An Altar and the World by Barbara Brown Taylor
Fiction – Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney
Leadership – Creativity, Inc by Ed Catmull

What are you excited for in the future?
I’m so excited about the ministry opportunities at Community Church. Our church has so many incredibly talented people from all different professions. Our church has been learning about our Spiritual Gifts and how we can best use what God has given to us to build the kingdom “on earth as it is on heaven” (Matthew 6:10 NIV).

The Bible verse I think of the most for our church right now is Isaiah 43:19 ESV: “Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” It’s the hope of our staff that if you don’t have a church right now, you’ll consider partnering with ours as we discover what God has in store together.

The congregation is holding an Installation Service for Rev. Jennifer Rutter on Sunday, September 15, at 6 pm. Everyone is welcome.
