MACA Presents The Secret Sisters and Rodney Crowell

Monroe Area Council for the Arts (MACA) will present The Secret Sisters at the Hiwassee College Auditorium in Madisonville on Friday, Sept. 14, and legendary singer/songwriter Rodney Crowell on Monday, Oct. 1. Both performances begin at 7:30 p.m.
The Secret Sisters are real life sisters Laura and Lydia Rogers from Muscle Shoals, Alabama, whose vocal harmonies have been compared to the Everly Brothers. They have recorded with T Bone Burnett and Jack White, toured the world, and walked the black carpet at the Los Angeles premiere of The Hunger Games, which includes their haunting folk ballad “Tomorrow Will Be Kinder.” Since releasing their debut, The Secret Sisters, in 2010, the girls have been on a whirlwind world tour and performed with some of music’s greatest stars, such as Elvis Costello and Jakob Dylan.
“Tomorrow Will Be Kinder” fits with the pure harmonies of bluegrass, folk, mid-‘60s pop, and classic country on their debut. Once word got out of the song’s association with The Hunger Games, a new demographic suddenly became intensely interested in the Secret Sisters.
“It’s given us an opportunity to reach a much younger crowd, because our music naturally attracts an older crowd,” said Laura.
The next album will be recorded in either Nashville or Los Angeles. The Secret Sisters have arrived.
Grammy Award-winning artist Rodney Crowell, whose performance is supported by funding from the Tennessee Arts Commission, first gained widespread recognition as a leader of the new traditionalist movement in the mid-‘80s. He was, in fact, a singer, songwriter, and producer with roots and ambitions extending far beyond the movement’s parameters. He has written and produced for a variety of artists, including the great Johnny Cash, The Oak Ridge Boys, Bob Seger, Crystal Gayle, and others, while steadily adding to a prestigious catalog of albums and hit singles.
Crowell’s latest album, Kin, a finely crafted ode to home and family, is a collaboration with bestselling memoirist and poet Mary Karr. The album contains musical contributions from Lucinda Williams, Norah Jones, Kris Kristofferson, Vince Gill, Lee Ann Womack, Rosanne Cash, Chely Wright, and Emmylou Harris.
Tickets for both shows are $20 ($18/advance) for adults and $10 for students. Advance tickets are available with cash or check at all Monroe County Citizens National Banks and Century 21 Hendershot Realty in Madisonville. Tickets may also be purchased with a credit card online at www.monroearts.com or by calling the MACA office at (423) 442-3210.
