The term “mulligan” is a common one in our everyday vocabulary. Its most accepted origin is of a Canadian golfer named David Mulligan who, after duffing his drive off the first tee on a Montreal golf course, re-teed his ball and swung again. “Taking a mulligan” was born.
Mulligan – a second chance or do-over – is a word invoked in a wide range of human activities today. In most cases, that second chance has to be allowed or condoned (forgiven). Thus, forgiveness and second chances are related concepts – you generally need the first to get the second.
While there may be limits on forgiveness and second chances among humans, no failure is too great where God is concerned. If you confess and repent, Jesus Christ will forgive and restore you, and the Bible gives numerous examples of this.
For instance, King David, after committing adultery with Bathsheba and arranging her husband Uriah’s death in battle, repented. God forgave him, his reign continued, and his link in the lineage of the Messiah was secured.
Meanwhile, the apostle Peter denied knowing Jesus three times before dawn after Jesus’ arrest the night before. Yet, he was forgiven and tapped by Jesus to lead His church.
Sadly, and unnecessarily, many of us live our lives in a winter-like state – lonely, anxious, burdened with regrets. It may be regret for actions done or left undone, comments said or left unsaid, lost or broken relationships, apprehensions about the future, lingering bitterness or negativity.
Just as Earth emerges from winter’s cold grasp to a new season of warmth, color and new life in the spring, how wonderful would it be to have a clean slate, to shift a heavy burden of negativity from the melancholy of winter to the verdant brightness of spring?
If you’ve lived your life without Jesus, ask for your mulligan today – a fresh start that is possible only because of His willing death for you on the cross. If you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior, He will forgive you your sins and never hold them against you again. You can rest from the weight of sin, and from your fears, forever.
