Doug Morris, a former pilot with Delta Air Lines, discovered Tellico Plains about a decade ago while pursuing his passion for motorcycles. During one of his many trips, Doug fell in love with the area and decided to make Tellico Plains his home. He launched a cabin rental business in 2014 while contemplating the opening of a restaurant on the scenic Tellico River. Joined by his partner, Mary Spencer, the owner of an ad specialty company in Auburn, Alabama, Doug and Mary purchased the vacant restaurant on the Tellico River, formerly home to another popular area restaurant, Cardin’s Landing.
The new restaurant, named Iron Works Grille on The River, opened in April of this year.
“We chose the name Iron Works Grille on The River due to its close proximity to a historical site located less than 100 yards from the restaurant,” said Mary. “Known as the Tellico Iron Company, the iron works provided munitions to the Confederate Army during the Civil War.”
“This area is rich in history, as it was also an important center of Cherokee culture,” said Doug.
“When we first opened, we intentionally limited the menu,” said Mary. “We believed it was better to offer a few items done right. We listened carefully to our customers and expanded our menu offerings by introducing many of your traditional Southern favorites.”
Savor their gourmet burgers, sandwiches, and salads while enjoying more than 300 feet of pristine and serene Tellico River frontage. Also, be sure to ask about their already famous and original bacon wrapped “Wickles Pickles” and homemade pork rinds available in five flavors with their homemade ranch dressing. You’ll also want sample their extensive selection of on-tap craft beers and wines.
Your favorite sporting events are also featured in Iron Works Grille’s indoor and covered outdoor areas on their new wide screen TVs and surround sound systems. Sprawl out in one of their comfortable Adirondack chairs on their spacious lawn along the river, or play a favorite family lawn game like cornhole. Kid and pet friendly, Iron Works Grille is designed with your family’s comfort in mind. Be sure to ask about their $1.99 Thursday nights kids specials and 6 pm piñata, in addition to live music on most weekends.
Planning a special event? Ask Iron Works Grille’s events coordinator, Kayla Cummings, just how they can help.
“Our venue is large enough to host all types of events, including wedding rehearsal dinners, Christmas parties, birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, and beer/wine pairing dinners – you name it,” said Doug

Mary and Doug wish to share with you not only Tellico Plains’ abundant history, but also the warm Southern hospitality of the Iron Works Grille on The River. They invite you to celebrate “The Rhythm of the Smokies,” the rapids on the Tellico River, historical Tellico Plains, and great food and companionship.
