Molière’s Tartuffe to Play at the Clarence Brown Theatre

The Clarence Brown Theatre will perform Tartuffe by Molière in the Lab Theatre from October 6-23, 2011.
“I love Molière because he uses language so well and the idea of a play being this many hundred years old and still addressing issues of today. Issues of family, of how we get along, and issues about what is true and not true,” said Jim O’Connor, Director.
Molière wrote Tartuffe, originally entitled Tartuffe, ou l’Imposteur (Tartuffe the Imposter), in 1664. In the play, Orgon, a wealthy Parisian patriarch, falls under the influence of a self-righteous hypocrite named Tartuffe. Orgon becomes obsessed with Tartuffe and the religious ideals the trickster supposedly stands for.
Jim O’Connor (Director) has directed at numerous regional theatres across the country as well as in New York and for the Dublin Theatre Festival. He was awarded the Cleveland Critics Circle Award and has received a Joseph Jefferson nomination in Chicago. He also received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Penn State University where he received his Master of Fine Arts degree. Earlier this year he was inducted into the first class of Legacy recipients by the Theatre Program at Purdue University where he served as the Artistic Director and Chief Administrator. He also served as the Artistic Director for Theatre South Carolina.
The cast is composed of resident artists, visiting guest artists, graduate and undergraduate students, and area professionals.
Tartuffe runs from October 6-23, 2011. Evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Matinee performances begin at 2:00 p.m. Ticket prices are $15 for adults, $12 for regular students, and $5 for UT students.
