What’s in a Title?

East TN Mountain ViewsBy Ashley Akers

Sometimes titles and certifications are important to us, and sometimes they’re less important. When selecting a physician to treat our family, we like to see MD after the doctor’s name. I want to be sure that the pilot in control of the aircraft I’m about to depart on is certified for that particular piece of equipment.

Sometimes in life we place a high value on titles and certifications. At other times, we ignore them. Perhaps we value those titles and certifications that appear to be the most important to our personal health and welfare.

Let me tell you about a certification that should be important to you as it can have a significant impact on your family’s health and well-being. It’s called the ACAC, or the American Council for Accredited Certification. So why should this organization be important to you and your family?

Living in East Tennessee has been a blessing for me, my husband, and our 10-month-old daughter. But as you no doubt already know yourself, our warm and humid summers and mild winters can also present their own challenges. These conditions represent the perfect conditions for mold to flourish both inside and outside your home.

Mold is the source of a variety of health conditions within our home for family members that often go undiagnosed or even misdiagnosed. Often confused for allergies or even asthma, mold and mold spores, which often go undetected and left untreated, can worsen these illnesses over time.

If you believe your home may have a mold problem, the first step is to request an objective evaluation. If necessary, you may even be advised to hire a mold remediation company. So who should you call?

If the mold remediation company you contact is not certified mold remediation specialists certified by the ACAC, they do not meet the minimum federal criteria for mold remediation. But a word of caution. There are area companies that unlawfully use the ACAC certification emblem on their websites and literature. Insist that any company you’re considering hiring for mold remediation is certified and that they present a letter to you from the ACAC as evidence.

Don’t make the mistake of paying two to three times more money for a company masquerading as a certified mold remediation company. Insist on an ACAC certified mold remediation contractor.
