Fall Tree and Shrub Planting Tips

April showers may bring spring flowers, but autumn is a great time to plant trees and shrubs. Soil temperatures are warmer now than in the spring, so there’s plenty of time for trees and shrubs to establish important healthy root growth before winter sets in. Because soil temperatures remain warmer longer after air temperatures drop, roots will continue to thrive.
Planting in fall will give your plants a head start going into next year’s warm summer months, reducing the stress that trees and shrubs often experience at that time of the year. Here are some fall tree and shrub planting tips I’m confident you’ll find helpful.
• Select a location that meets the growing requirements of your tree or shrub. Be mindful of planting near your home’s septic system.
• Exercise caution when transporting your plant to avoid damage to its fragile root system.
• Dig a $10 hole for a $5 tree. In other words, the hole should be wider than the diameter of the plant’s root ball. Also, loosen the soil under the root ball. Both of these steps will promote healthy root growth.
• If the plant is in a pot, remove the pot before planting. If root-bound, cutting roots will actually encourage new root growth.
• Be certain that the top of the root ball is even with the surrounding soil level.
• Amend the soil as necessary. Your local garden center professional can provide you with helpful information on recommended soil amendments and the need to prune your tree or shrub.
• Tap down the soil lightly so that beneficial rain can reach your plant’s root system.
• Add 2-3” of mulch to help your plant retain moisture. Do not mound mulch or allow it to contact its trunk.
• Water as recommended by your garden professional.
