Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church

Monday, December 5th, 2016 | Uncategorized | No Comments

Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church invites you to mid-week Advent Services on Wednesday evenings at 5 p.m. Services in December will be held on December 7, 14, and 21 and will be followed at by a simple meal of soup, bread, and dessert. Worship will be using Marty Haugen’s “Holden Evening Prayer,” a simple, lovely vesper setting that was originally written for Holden Village, an isolated Lutheran retreat center located in the North Cascade Mountains in Washington State. Everyone is invited to pause during the hectic pre-Christmas activities and enjoy the music and liturgy during the Advent Season.

Fall was a busy time at Shepherd of the Lake as we participated with the Tellico Village Community Church in the annual Blessing of the Animals, held our annual church picnic, conducted several small-group sessions, and enjoyed regular book club meetings. In October, we took part in the annual “God’s Work Our Hands” effort of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. This year found us out and about in the community doing various yard work and odd jobs for local residents, conducting a teaching and working session to create hand-crafted greeting cards, completing assorted small and large projects at Branches of Monroe County, and supporting Litter Angels as we removed trash from along Tellico Parkway in Tellico Village.

Water to Thrive is a faith-based non-profit headquartered in Austin, Texas, dedicated to spreading awareness of the global water crisis while raising the funds needed to construct water wells for those who desperately need them in rural Africa. In the U.S., they work with individuals, churches, corporate offices, schools – anyone who shares their passion to bring clean, safe water to those who need it. In Africa, they partner with local NGOs to implement their water work. By working with partners who are familiar with the countries and the communities where they implement their water work, they are able to better understand the water need, the best ways to address it, and they are able to work efficiently and effectively to construct sustainable water wells.

Since being founded in April 2008, Water to Thrive has funded more than 500 water projects in Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and Uganda. Since September, the congregation at Shepherd of the Lake is grateful to have raised the funds to sponsor three new wells.

Shepherd of the Lake is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and is located in Tellico Village at 143 Chota Center, across from the new Tellico Village Visitor’s Center. We have regular worship services with communion at 9 a.m. on Sunday mornings and invite you to visit with us on any Sunday or for our mid-week Advent vesper services during December.

Pastor Ingrid J. Schalk can be contacted at (865) 816-4756. For more information about our congregation and our ministry, visit www.shepherdofthelaketn.org.
